What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry refers to a number of treatments used to improve the appearance of your smile. Cosmetic dentistry can boost your confidence and allow you to get more enjoyment out of your smile. You can address a number of common concerns with cosmetic dentistry including:

  • Stained teeth
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Misshapen teeth

At New Roc Dental, Dr. Wynter provides a number of effective solutions to cosmetic dental concerns. During your appointment, you and Dr. Wynter work together to determine the best options for achieving your best smile.

What are composite fillings?

Composite or white fillings are used to fill in areas of your tooth damaged by cavities or decay. The biggest advantage of composite fillings is that they can be matched to the color of your natural teeth. Composite fillings are a popular alternative to other filling materials, such as amalgam and gold, which are highly visible. In addition to filling cavities, composite fillings are also used to address chipped and broken teeth.

Although composite fillings are highly effective and allow for the most natural-appearing restoration, they aren’t right for everyone. During your appointment, Dr. Wynter examines your cavity to determine if you're a good candidate for composite fillings.

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin tooth-colored coverings that go over the surface of your teeth. Veneers are used to address a number of cosmetic concerns including gapped, misshapen, damaged, and stained teeth. There are two main types of veneers:

Porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers are custom tooth coverings made from molds of your teeth. The first step in getting porcelain veneers is preparing the teeth. Dr. Wynter removes a small portion of your tooth enamel to make room for the veneer. She then takes an impression of your prepared teeth and sends it off to a lab where your custom porcelain veneers are made.

Once they come in, Dr. Wynter places the veneer to ensure a good fit. After making the necessary adjustments, the last step is to cement the veneer to the surface of your tooth.

Composite veneers

Composite veneers are made from a tooth-colored filling material. The steps of getting composite veneers are similar to porcelain veneers. Dr. Wynter begins by removing a small portion of your tooth enamel to make room for the veneer. In many cases, composite veneers require much less of your natural tooth enamel to be removed.

Composite veneers aren’t made from impressions but are instead formed directly on the tooth. This means that many composite veneers can be completed in one visit. After your tooth has been prepared, Dr. Wynter applies the composite filling material and shapes it to achieve the desired look. A special light is used to harden the composite material and cement it to the surface of your tooth.
