Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are what we use to restore a tooth that has been damaged by decay. Not every cavity needs to be treated with a root canal. Instead, we can treat most cavities with a simple filling treatment. Fillings can strengthen your teeth and help prevent future cavities.

What is a Dental Filling?

At New Roc Dental, we use dental fillings to treat cavities and decay. After Dr. Wynter has removed the infected material and sanitized your tooth, she will fill the hole with a strong composite resin. We design this resin to match the color of your surrounding teeth, so you can go back to your daily routine without having to worry about the appearance of your tooth.

Composite fillings are durable and long-lasting. They are also cost-effective and easy to install. Instead of waiting weeks for an expensive porcelain filling to be ordered and delivered, we can place your composite filling the same day as your treatment.

After your filling has hardened, it will strengthen and support your damaged tooth. It will also act as a shield to prevent bacteria and food debris from entering your tooth through small cracks or chips.

What is the Procedure?

Before we can place your filling, we will need to remove the infection from your tooth. To do this, Dr. Wynter will begin by injecting a local anesthetic around your infected tooth. This will numb the area so you won’t feel any discomfort during your procedure.

Next, she will make a small incision in your tooth to remove any infected material that is trapped inside. After she has cleaned out the infection, Dr. Wynter will sanitize the inside of your tooth to kill any remaining bacteria.

To finish, Dr. Wynter will fill your tooth with a small amount of composite resin. We apply the resin as putty and harden it with a special curing light once it is in place. After your filling has hardened, we will conduct a bite test to ensure you can chew comfortably.

How Do I Care for My Filling?

To avoid breaking or losing your filling, it is important to take good care of it. Be sure to brush your teeth every day to keep the area clean and bacteria-free. Composite fillings can stain, so please avoid drinking too much coffee, tea, or red wine. Tobacco products can also cause staining and discoloration.

Do not chew on any hard foods or objects like ice, pencils, etc. Do not use your teeth as tools to open packages – this can break your filling. Also, please be careful when eating olives with pits, popcorn, or any other food with a hard center.

If your filling becomes damaged or falls out, please call us right away. It is important to keep your filling intact to ensure your tooth is protected. Unfortunately, a tooth can become reinfected, even with a dental filling. If you are experiencing any unusual pain or sensitivity in your tooth, please call to schedule an appointment.
